The Oppenheim Block
This stone block has stood in front of a house on Madison Avenue for as long as I can remember and, also for as long as I can remember, no one has really explained why it's there.
Guessing, but could it be a stepping block to get into a carriage? Is it near the street? I've seen these in Charleston, SC and the name on it suggests that it was in front of the Oppenheim home.
I've thought about that, though it's not close enough to the street, but set close to the wall. I'm wondering if it wasn't moved from an Oppenheim residence elsewhere in the neighborhood.
A lifelong resident of Albany, N.Y. who loves history and writing, I'm also the site admin for Broadway actor Hugh Panaro. Currently working on a history of the Albany Rural Cemetery. Oh, and a Whovian.
